Creation Sings: Stars and Skin

August 1, 2011

Stars first.

Basically, a star is a massive, luminous ball of fire and energy held together by gravity (wikipedia.org). Our Sun, the closest star to planet Earth, is a relatively small star; considering the biggest star that we know of is VY Canis Majoris, which is hundreds of thousands of times more massive than our Sun. The energy emanating from one average star is utterly incomprehensible. Here’s where it gets more crazy.

“Our…galaxy seems to contain about 200 billion stars; and we’re actually about average number of stars…an average galaxy contains between 1011 and 1012 stars. In other words, galaxies, on average have between 100 billion and 1 trillion [stars]…Now, how many galaxies are there? Astronomers estimate that there are approximately 100 billion to 1 trillion galaxies in the Universe. So if you multiply those two numbers together, you get between 1022 and 1024 stars in the Universe…There are between 10 sextillion and 1 septillion stars in the Universe” (universetoday.com).

1 septillion is: 1000000000000000000000000 I have no doubt that there are more stars than that.

Skin second.

Have you ever stopped to think about how insane human skin is?

“Skin acts as a waterproof, insulating shield, guarding the body against extremes of temperature, damaging sunlight, and harmful chemicals. It also exudes antibacterial substances that prevent infection and manufactures vitamin D for converting calcium into healthy bones. Skin additionally is a huge sensor packed with nerves for keeping the brain in touch with the outside world. At the same time, skin allows us free movement, proving itself an amazingly versatile organ” (National Geographic: Skin).

If you slip and fall on your knee and have a gash in your skin, if heals itself!! It takes virtually no effort on your part (besides stopping the bleeding) and your body can heal itself. When you’re hot, your skin sweats in order to cool your temperature. When you are endangering your body, the senses on your skin let you know (e.g. heat)! Nothing is quite like it!

Check out this multimedia thingy: http://science.nationalgeographic.com/science/health-and-human-body/human-body/skin-article/. Click on “Stresses on Skin” and use the slider to show how your body heals itself.

I am the Lord, and there is no other,
besides me there is no God;
I equip you, though you do not know me,
that people may know, from the rising of the sun
and from the west, that there is none besides me;
I am the Lord, and there is no other.
I form light and create darkness,
I make well-being and create calamity,
I am the Lord, who does all these things.” – Isaiah 45
